Black Russian Terriers (BRT) are said to be “Stalin’s Dogs.” They were created and used by the Russians as guard dogs. They like to do things and they need to be trained to do things, else they get out of hand. They are very loyal to their owners and they thrive in a variety of environments.
Who should get a BRT?
Any dog, big or small, requires some amount of attention. BRTs are no exception. They’re not too needy but they will take up some of your time. They have long hair which requires grooming. They need to be trained well, because if not, you’ll have problems when they are fully grown. They are active dogs; they enjoy hiking, running, swimming, and fetching just as much as any other dog, if not more. If you don’t have time to do all these things for the next 10 to 14 years, you shouldn’t get a Black Russian Terrier.
(In fact, if you don’t have time to pay attention to a dog you buy, you shouldn’t own a dog.)
Also, since these are big dogs, they need space. They shouldn’t be locked up in a small apartment. They need a backyard.
Do I have to train them?
Yes. Black Russian Terriers are guard dogs. If you don’t train them, they will attack people and other dogs/cats that seem foreign to them (outside the family). These dogs should always be trained.
